Are you traveling to Hong Kong soon? If so, be sure to check out some of the excellent local museums while you are there. Listed below are some of the best museums in Hong Hong.

1. Hong Kong Space Museum

This location is a perfect tourist attraction for the entire family. It is a very popular spot in Hong Kong that is shaped like an egg, and the Omnimax Theatre uses the dome as a projection screen for videos. The front end of the Space Shuttle is on display and can be walked through, and various models and artifacts are on display as well.

2. Hong Kong Police Museum

This museum is small in size but worth a visit. It will provide tourists with the history of Hong Kong from colonial times to the present. Anything having to do with Hong Kong’s police force is covered. The building is located on a hill providing a wonderful view of Hong Kong Island.

3. Hong Kong Maritime Museum

A trip to this museum is an enjoyable excursion. It is sponsored by the Hong Kong government and the Tourism Board. Visitors can learn a great deal about maritime affairs, shipping and warfare in different parts of the world as well as in Hong Kong itself. It will be opening this year in a new location and will have more space for models, artifacts and other displays.

4. The Flagstaff House Museum of Teaware

This museum is small in size but has a wonderful collection of antique ceramics. The building is a British colonial house that happens to be a monument of historical significance. You can enjoy tea and a meal in the cafe and also buy some lovely items.

5. The Museum of Art

If you love art, you must put this museum on your list of places to visit while in Hong Kong. Almost all of the art contained within is Chinese. The cafe overlooks Victoria Harbor, and the gift shop is where lovely souvenirs can be obtained. With seven galleries and four floors, this museum is an impressive size. The Chinese Antiquities Gallery is the highlight of the excursion.

6. Hong Kong Science Museum

If you are bringing the kids along on your trip to Hong Kong, they will especially enjoy a visit to the Science Museum, which caters to teaching children about science. The museum consists of 18 galleries and 500 exhibits with interactive models, videos and computers. Do not think that it is just for children, though, as you may learn a thing or two about science as well.

7. Hong Kong Museum of History

The History Museum is located next to the Science Museum and will tell the story of the history of Hong Kong from prehistoric times up to today. There are numerous artifacts and videos to enjoy.

Hong Kong is populated with many museums that can entertain and teach both children and adults. You will have a great time browsing through them throughout your trip.

Singapore is an island city state, just off the cost of Malaysia in South East Asia, Singapore is made up of 63 different islands and once was part of Malaysia, gaining its independence in August of 1965. There is a lot of natural history in the local area as well as plenty of colonial history dating back to the British rule of the area. Singapore has lost much of its natural rainforest and is a very urbanized landscape. There is plenty on offer to see and do though in this wonderfully cosmopolitan city.

Singapore Zoo/Singapore Botanical Gardens

Universal Studios

Shopping

Night Safari

F1 Grand Prix

There is a lot to see and do when you visit Singapore.

The Zoo and Gardens

Both of these attractions are a good way to see some of the Flora and Fauna which is native to South East Asia. You also get to see species from other parts of the world as well. The zoo and gardens are a great was to spend a couple of hours and explore the sights and sounds that are on offer. You can even take in a Night Safari as well where you will see nocturnal animals coming out and being fed, a bit more natural than a normal zoo setting. All of the plants and animals at all three of the destinations are well looked after, and they have very high standards set by themselves.

Universal Studios

Universal Studios has been very popular since it opened in March 2010. There are a mixture of rides there which will help the kids of all ages have fun, including mums and dads. From the Transformers: The Ride 3D experience, to the thundering Battlestar Galactica Rollercoaster, there is plenty to get you screaming with joy at all of the fun you will be having. There are plenty of places that you can grab something to eat in between the roller coaster riding, don’t eat too much though, wouldn’t want it coming back up on the next ride!

F1 Grand Prix

If you love things loud and also love fast cars, then try making your trip coincide with the Singapore F1 Grand Prix which usually happens in September of each year. The circuit is made up of the streets through the city, and it is held at night time making it a truly spectacular spectacle to behold. This is a very popular time of year to come though, so you need to book early. You will find things going on from the Thursday before the race, with the race being on the Sunday evening. You will need to make sure you have your ear plugs for the weekend though as the F1 cars are not only fast, but they are very loud as well. Due to the high demand when the F1 team is in town, it is not only the busiest tome to come but also the most expensive, so if you are looking for a cheap holiday abroad, Singapore may not be for you at this time of year.

Shopping

If shopping s more your thing then you will not be disappointed with Singapore. There is always a sale on somewhere, and you have some of the best shopping malls in all of Asia here as well, so lots to choose from. As you are a tourist you can get a VAT refund when you leave the country, which can make some items that you buy very cheap indeed. You have a mixture of all of the big well known fashion designers with their own stores, to off the shelf fashion boutiques and small market with high quality, practical and cheap ensembles available so all wallets can shop easily in Singapore. There are also plenty of tailors who can make your bespoke clothing and custom made suits at very reasonable prices. After all of that shopping, you can stop off at a restaurant or a café and sample some of the local foods on offer. You will be able to find traditional Malay and Chinese dishes as well as plenty of western fair as well. Whether you stay in Singapore for your entire holiday, or just stop off for a few days passing through, you will sure to have an amazing time when you visit this pearl of the orient.

You may still be exploring the idea of studying abroad in Hong Kong or you may have been accepted at your chosen university and be ready to pack up and leave home. There are many great reasons to study in Hong Kong including the stable economy and quality of education, as well as the sense of adventure you will get from learning in another culture. Here are some top tips to help you on your way.

Off to a Good Start

If you are still at the early planning stages there are several factors to consider. Research education programs and facilities offered at each university and then check admission policies of your preferred establishments to make sure you qualify for admission before applying. If English is not your first language, you will need to complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent.

Why Study in Hong Kong?

Most importantly, because four of Hong Kong’s universities appear on the list of the top 200 universities in the world, with the University of Hong Kong featuring in 18th place. However, aside from its academic prowess, the city offers an intoxicating blend of ultra-modern living and ancient heritage that is unlike anywhere else in the world. What’s more, along with brushing up on your Cantonese and Mandarin, English is an official language in Hong Kong so you can ease yourself in gently.

Be Well Prepared

Before you go, make sure you have taken care of practical things such as organizing your student visa or entry permit, checking your passport expiration date, arranging flight insurance and other travel essentials. It would be disappointing to miss out on such a great opportunity because you overlooked one of these important details.

A Rare Opportunity

Being a student in Hong Kong offers a rare opportunity to live in a city where housing is largely only afforded by the highest paid. Even traveler hostels are more expensive than in other Asian countries. However, many university student halls are very cheap, providing accommodation in a property hot spot that doubles as the gateway to the rest of China. From there the possibilities are endless.

More Than City Limits

Hong Kong is not just about the skyscrapers and bright neon lights. Seventy percent of the city is undeveloped, so there is ample opportunity to get away from it all or head out for some education enhancing adventures. Sure, there are karaoke bars and shops galore, but there are also temples marvel at and national parks for hiking, cycling and rock climbing in. And it’s all accessible by public transport making it easy to soak up traditional culture, spectacular scenery and sample fresh fish and local delicacies.

Finally, having made the decision to study in Hong Kong, make sure you get yourself an International Student Identity Card that will entitle you to discounts in shops and restaurants and will also help ease the strain on your student budget.

Hong Kong is internationally well-known for its entertainment, shopping and dining. What most people are not aware of is how many attractions Hong Kong has available for families with kids. This world-city has many family attractions besides the famous Disneyland for children.

Taking a charter private jet to Hong Kong to see Disneyland is something every child will enjoy. Disneyland is the number one attraction for families with kids visiting or living in Hong Kong. A family can visit the park and cover everything in a day, so there is no need to stay overnight, unless the kids want to stay late for the fireworks display.

Next, there is the famous Ocean Park in Hong Kong. This is one of the best amusement parks in Asia, and it occupies a mountainous peninsula on Hong Kong Island. The main draw to Ocean Park is the ocean and sea attractions. There is a fantastic shark aquarium, jellyfish displays and amazing dolphin shows. The park is home to some thriller roller coasters and other exciting rides. All children enjoy the scenic cable-car ride. If you plan the trip ahead of time and book far enough in advance, the dolphin center in the park is definitely worthwhile.

Another exciting adventure for the kids and adults is the Noah’s Ark attraction. Noah’s Ark features full-sized replicas of the vessel, as well as the animals that entered the ark, that saved life on earth during the great flood. There is an excellent biblical presentation about the story as well. The Noah’s Ark center offers plenty of educational activities related to nature and man, as well as fun and adventurous rope courses. Access to the park is by ferry, which is also entertaining for the children.

Kids and teens enjoy visiting the Hong Kong Space Museum and the Hong Kong Science Museum, which are only ten minutes apart from each other. The space museum is known for having one of the best planetariums in the world, while the science museum hosts one of the largest ‘energy machines’ in the world. This machine demonstrates the various ways that energy is used with a falling ball.

It is always fun to stop by the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens. It offers a beautiful landscape and has some unique reptiles. The Edward Youde Aviary is within a few minutes walking distance, inside Hong Kong park, and has a nice collection of birds that are indigenous to the Far East and Southeast Asia.

The Hong Kong Park is a perfect place to let the kids play while mom and dad relax with a quiet walk through the park. A big hit with the kids is the water fountain inside the park that they can play in. This is fantastic during the heat of the summer when the kids can get soaked from head to toe. Keep in mind that you might want to pack a change of clothes! Another highlight the park offers for the kids is the many small ponds packed full of carp and turtles.

Getting to Hong Kong is fairly simple, and exploring Hong Kong with kids can be packed full of adventure and fun.

There are hundreds of things to do in Hong Kong; it’s an excellent holiday destination with lots of fascinating attractions. The city is known for its long skyline and vibrant city centre. Hong Kong also has some excellent restaurants and plenty of interesting places to eat. There really is something for everyone. Enjoy a visit to the space museum, sample the street food or spend some time relaxing at the Nan Lian Gardens. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities, so here are some of the top things to do in Hong Kong to help you plan your trip.

1. Visit the Hong Kong Space Museum

The space museum is located in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. If you love space and astronomy then don’t miss out on seeing the space museum. Here you can learn about the history of space travel and enjoy interactive experiences.

2. Sample the Street Food

Don’t just spend your money in the gourmet restaurants, head to the streets of Hong Kong to sample some real Asian delights. You can soak up the atmosphere and taste some of the local dishes at very low prices.

3. See Victoria Peak

One of the best ways to see Hong Kong’s spectacular skyline is at the top of Victoria Peak. Victoria Peak is a mountain in Hong Kong that is one of the top tourist attractions. Here you can see breathtaking views of the entire city.

4. Place a Bet At Happy Valley Racecourse

5. Ride on The Star Ferry

The star ferry is another one of Hong Kong’s most famous attractions. It is a ferry service that crosses Victoria harbour and allows tourists to see the sights of Hong Kong from the water. You can go on short 10 minute rides or choose to go for an hour if you want a bit more time to take in the views and landmarks.

6. Escape to Stanley

Stanley is far different from most other areas in Hong Kong. It is an ideal escape from the busy city centre. It has pretty coves, beaches and rolling hills to explore. If you get the bus it’s only a short journey from the main strip. If the weather is nice you can hire a canoe or sunbathe on the beach.

7. Learn About the History of Hong Kong

The Hong Kong museum of history is located on Chatham road. History buffs will love spending hours absorbing information in this fascinating museum. You can learn about the development and history of Hong Kong. It’s worth setting aside a full morning, afternoon or even a whole day to learn as much as you can about how Hong Kong came to be the place it is today.

8. Relax In the Nan Lian Garden

The Nan Lian Garden is another great place to get away from it all. These beautiful gardens are full of lush vegetation, vibrant flowers and Japanese style gardens. There is a pond with Koi fish swimming around where you can sit and watch the world go by. It’s one of the top attractions in Hong Kong and definitely worth a visit if you like picturesque gardens.

The Big Buddha in Po Lin Monastery is simply breathtaking. People travel from all over Asia to see this amazing sight.
Taiwanese food is great, but if you want a break from it and just splurge in a good old fast food joint then I highly recommend Napoli Pizza! It is a fast food pizza franchise in Taipei, and to my surprise it was actually quite good, and quite reasonably priced. The best thing I found about it was that it combined the best of both worlds….Fried Chicken and Pizza! What more can you ask for???

The Napoli Pizza can be found in most neighborhoods in Taipei. My wife and I visited the Minsheng Road branch near Shuanglian MRT station. It was quite cheap, for about 249 Taiwan dollars (about 8.00 USD) we got a 2 person set meal, that comes with a medium sized pan pizza, 2 soft drinks, and 2 large fried chicken pieces!

I wasn’t expecting much, but when the food came out, the portions were quite big, and definitely for that price it was well worth it! To put things to perspective for such a similar combo at a Pizza Hut in Singapore, it would have costed us about 4 times more, but with a way smaller portions…its actually quite crappy eating at Pizza Hut in Singapore!

The best of both worlds…fried chicken and pizza. Finally someone got it right!

The Napoli Pizza branch at Minsheng Road.

So if you are ever in Taipei and looking for a quick bite, then I highly recommend you to check out the nearest Napoli Pizza branch! It’s totally awesome, cheap and good!

Dihua Street is a charming little street in the Datong District of Taipei. It is one of the oldest streets in Taipei with a whole stretch of nicely preserved historical buildings. Its prominence began in the 1850′s and till this day is still an important commerce center for Chinese herbal products, fabrics, and incense products. Take a stroll at Dihua Street to see how life in the 1800′s was was like in Taipei.

To reach Dihua Street, the nearest MRT subway is Shuanglian MRT station. That being said, it is still about a 1km walk. One of the interesting things I love about this street is the way the old historical shop houses are nicely preserved, and how it blends in with modern day businesses. As with all old streets in Taipei, there are lots of vendors on the street selling food and snacks! Another thing that was pretty cool, is a very old complex there that is a museum called the Lin Liu-Hsin Puppet Theater Museum, which showcases the traditional theater art of puppetry in Taiwan.

Notice how the old style buildings nicely co-exist with the stores below?

Another landmark on Dihua Street is the Xiahai City God Temple, which is a centuries old Chinese temple that houses the City God and his wife. What is very special about this temple is that it is also known as a matchmaking temple, where the City God and his wife is known to have the ability to help singles find the perfect soul mate. My wife’s friend told me before that he went to the temple once to pray to find a great wife, and when he came back to Singapore, a few weeks later he met a girl and they began dating. Shortly after that they got married. And the very remarkable thing was that only after they got married, did he only find out that she too went to the same temple around the same time to pray to find a good husband! Is this coincidence or what?! So if your single and wanting to find a soul mate, try your luck here!

Crowds of people at Xiahai City God Temple. I’m guessing most of these people here are singles.

People praying and making offerings to the City God Temple.

Another thing you will notice at Dihua Street, are the rows upon rows of shops selling traditional Chinese herbs. This is supposedly one of the most busiest areas in all of Taipei that sell Chinese herbs. If you come by 2 weeks before the start of Chinese New Years, this street will be jam packed with people looking to buy their necessities and ingredients to prepare for the Chinese New Year’s festivities.

Even on Minsheng Road you will see some old style buildings.

So this is it, a quick tour through the Dihua Street in Datong District of Taipei. You should definitely check it out, as its a pretty unique place to walk by which is something off the tourist trail. It is an old part of Taipei, but still bustles with life in the modern day.

Located right beside the Taipei Confucius Temple in Datong District of Taipei is the UNESCO world hertitage site, The Taipei Baoan Temple. It is very similar in architecture as the Longshan Temple, but one unique thing is the amount of dragons that flank the entire temple grounds. You’ll see dragons along the column posts, dragons along the rooftop, and even dragons printed on the various lanterns hanging throughout the temple. The way the temple was preserved so well is also remarkable. Here’s a closer look at the Taipei Baoan Temple.

To get to the Baoan Temple, one great way is to the cut through the garden complex right in front of the temple. It is a pretty nice garden. There is also a small pond in the back, with a beautiful dragon fountain in the middle, as well as figurines hidden behind the foliage depicting old Chinese folk stories.

Entrance to the garden complex in front of Baoan Temple.

Figurines depicting scenes from old Chinese folk stories.

More figurines, this time with a tiger. That must be one brave person to pet a tiger like that.

That’s me with the dragon fountain in the back.

The dragon fountain.

Once my wife and I made our way through the garden, we were met with a nice view of Baoan Temple. To be honest, it looks very similar in design as the Longshan Temple, however if you enter the complex and take a closer look, there are slight differences. The main differences you will see are heavy use of gold lacquered paint on the wooden beams, columns, and doors. With the natural wood colour that was slightly darkened by the incense smoke, it provided a unique contrast to the gold coloured theme of the temple.

Main entrance to the Baoan Temple.

The imposing columns that form the main gates of the temple.

The main entrance into the main alter of the temple.

Candles burning.

Gold lacquered paint on the intricate roof cantilever beams.

Notice the gold coloured door panels, and gold coloured roof support structures. Very intricate and very awesome!

Close up of the gold coloured support structures. Notice that each piece also has a hand carved wooden figurine. So detailed!

Besides the use of gold colour in the temple, there was also particularly lots of dragons incorporated into the design. From the support beams to the lanterns, there were beautifully carved dragons everywhere. And if you are there in person, you will be able to see exactly how intricately crafted they were.

One of the many dragons spiraled around the column posts.

Close up view of one of the dragons.

Incense urn.

Some elderly devotees performing their morning prayers. Notice the intricate dragons carved on the golden door panels.

Close up of the intricate door panel and support structures.

Finally, if you pay close enough attention, there were also slight subtleties that make the overall impression of the temple very grand. There were numerous murals painted along the walls and along the beams on the roof each depicting a certain scene from an old Chinese folk tale. Also the use of laterns throughout the temple was evident and was pretty cool how it just peacefully dangled in the air while it hanged from the ceiling.

One of the murals on the wall. This one depicts a battle scene.

Each cross beam supporting the roof had its own mural, each of a different scene from various Chinese folk tales.

Lanterns just peacefully hanging from the ceiling.

More lanterns.

Located in the old part of Taipei, the Datong District is the Taipei Confucius Temple. It is modeled after the original Confucius Temple from Shandong Province in mainland China. If you don’t know who Confucius is, he is probably the most influential ancient Chinese philosopher of all time. His teachings of ethics and moral values are so profound and influential that till this day most typical Chinese people still cultivate these values. Strong family values and filial piety are such examples of his teachings that you will definitely see in a typical Chinese family.

The Taipei Confucius Temple is a great place to start when exploring the Datong area. One of the main differences between the Confucius Temple and the rest of the Taoist / Buddhist Chinese Temples you see in Taiwan is that Confucius Temples are more modest in nature and subtle in look. This is because Confucius valued simplicity. Another main difference you will see is that there are no statues of deities and stuff like that in the Confucius Temple. Reason being is that Confucius himself was never a saint, or god, but merely a mortal human being. Instead you will see ancestral tablets bearing his name in the main temple halls.

One of the huge walls you will see surrounding the Confucius Temple compound.

Some monkey statues as you head towards the entrance of the temple.

When we went, the temple was undergoing some renovations works. Here was one of the spooky looking buildings near the temple that were undergoing renovations.

In my last post I mentioned about the many unique snacks and food at Danshui, Taipei. Definitely if you ask many of the locals, there is one common snack that most will recommend you to try in Danshui. It is a unique tofu/fishcake dish and the authentic ones can only be found at a place called Ah Gei‘s in Danshui. This dish is not found elsewhere in Taipei, so my wife and I decided to check out what the hype was all about.

There are 2 branches of Ah Gei that we found in Danshui, one was along Zhongzheng Road, while the other one is just out from Zhongzheng Road near the waterfront. We tried the one that was located along Zhongzheng Road.

The Ah Gei branch on Zhongzheng Road.

The menu of Ah Gei from the shop on Zhongzheng Road.

View of the tofu and fish balls lined up to be cooked.

We ordered the famous fish balls and also the signature tofu fishcake. Here’s how they tasted.

The Fish balls

To me they had enough springiness to them when you bite into the fish ball, but either than that nothing too special about them. They were good, but to me they were just fish balls, so nothing much to report about on this.

The Ah Gei fish balls.

The Tofu Fishcake

Now the tofu fishcake was alittle bit more interesting. It was a giant tofu with a fishcake that seals the top. And as you break the fishcake seal, there is a hefty filling of clear vermicelli noodles (also known as glass noodles)! It was quite an interesting surprise inside. To further top it off is that the tofu is drenched in a thick, pink and gooey sauce. The sauce had a combination of a sweet and slight tinge sour taste to it.

The signature Ah Gei Tofu Fishcake with that mysterious pink sauce.

You bust open the fishcake on the top, and there is glass noodle underneath!

Close up view.

Everyone that I talked to said that this was a must try dish in Danshui and that it was really good. I guess it is good for some people, but for me I didn’t quite like it at all. I consider myself a pretty adventurous eater, where I will try anything, but surprisingly this is a rare occasion where I just didn’t like the taste of it. It was a little bit too sweet for me, and with the combination of the mysterious pink gooey sauce drenched over the glass noodles, tofu, and fishcake mixture, it didn’t really look right either. But don’t take my opinion for this, I’m sure its good, but its just not for me. I guess this is like one of those things where you either like or not. So check out Ah Gei in Danshui and you be the judge…

In case your interested here’s what the other branch of Ah Gei which is located near the waterfront in Danshui, just off Zhongzheng Road.
