There is a nice park right behind The Grand Hotel that most tourists overlook.  Right behind The Grand Hotel is the Yuanshan Scenic Area Park, which is basically a small mountain that The Grand Hotel is situated on.  Walking to the summit takes only 20 minutes, and is a very easy climb as it is well marked with a long staircase trail (be prepared to climb alot of steps).  If you time it correctly, you can actually catch the sunset overlooking the Taipei skyline in the distance.  Unfortunately for us, it was drizzling with overcast skies, so the view was kind of obscurred.  Either way, let me show you how to get to this park, as there is a shortcut through The Grand Hotel!             Read Full Article →

A place of elegance, history, and grandeur.  This pretty much sums up The Grand Hotel located in the northern part of Taipei City in Taiwan.  Established in 1952, this landmark hotel in Taipei was constructed on the basis of Chiang Kai Shek’s vision of having an extravagant hotel to serve visiting foreign dignitaries and to promote Chinese culture.  Such famous dignitaries include Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, and Margaret Thatcher.  It is a truly remarkable piece of architecture inspired by traditional Chinese elements that resemeble the grandness of the Forbidden City in Beijing.  Currently it has the world’s largest Chinese styled roof.  Although the hotel shows many signs of aging, its legacy and importance in Taiwan will still live on.           Read Full Article →
