After reading a few travel books and fancy brochures, my wife and I wanted to check out what the hype was all about at the Miramar Entertainment Park in the northern part of Taipei, Taiwan.  They call it an entertainment park, but really its just a glorified shopping mall, with a large ferris wheel on the top floor of the mall.  We took a quick tour of the place on a Friday night, and here are my top 3 first impressions:

1.)  Far from city centre, but close to MRT station

The Miramar Entertainment Park is actually located in the Dazhi area in the Zhongshan district of Taipei, which is the suburbs on the outskirts of town.  Its kind of far from the Taipei city centre, but if you have the patience to take the MRT all the way to Jiannan Road MRT station, the place is just a 5 minutes walk from the MRT station.

2.)  A mega mall, but kind of dead inside

The mall from the outside certainly does look impressive.  Its noticeable the moment you get off the train at the MRT station.  The first thing you will see is the huge ferris wheel mounted on the top of the mall.  However once you step into the mall, it felt kind of dead inside.  I was there on a Friday night, around 7pm, but where did the dinner crowd go?  Maybe I was on the wrong floor? Or maybe simply the wrong time? …

3.) Big IMAX theatre and Big Ferris Wheel

In addition to the shops inside the mall, there is a huge IMAX theatre showing all the latest films from hollywood and the giant ferris wheel that I mentioned previously.  Quite impressive specifications for these two attractions, with the IMAX being the largest in Asia (for commercial films) and the ferris wheel being the second largest in all of Taiwan.  I’m guessing its trying to differentiate itself from the other mega malls and street markets that are closer to the city centre by having such attractions.  If you have finished touring all the major places in Taipei and really have nothing else to do, or just want to chill out and catch a good movie on a big screen, then yes, I must say this is the place to go.

To summarize, the Miramar Entertainment Park to me is only okay.  I wouldn’t say its out of this world.  Its a nice mall to walk around, and has a nice movie theatre, but I simply wouldn’t classify it as one of the must see attractions in Taipei.  However, if you do have some extra time to kill in Taipei, then this maybe an option for you.

Have you been to the Miramar Entertainment Park?  Please share your experiences below!  Cheers!
